Valentine’s Day Dinner at Café Provencal, February 9 – 14

Chamber Music Society of Williamsburg, February 6
The Chamber Music Society of Williamsburg presents Chiara String Quartet. Renowned for bringing fresh excitement to traditional string quartet repertoire as well as for creating insightful interpretations of new music, the Chiara String Quartet captivates its audiences throughout the country.

Yorktown’s Cabin Fever Concert Series, Thursdays through March 1
Wipe the winter blues away with a free concert in the Freight Shed at Riverwalk Landing in historic Yorktown. Local musicians engage and interact with the audience during this unique experience. Sponsored by York County.  Limited seating, no tickets or reservations, first come-first served.

Tyke Hike: Woods & Waters, February 10
So, your child is beyond those first awkward steps and is ready to walk a distance.  Join us for a hike devoted to kids from 2 to 5 years old.  A friendly ranger will guide you and your new hiker along our shoreline and wooded trails.

Beyond the Shackles: The Role of African-Americans During the Civil War, February 10
By the mid-nineteenth century, not every African-American was enslaved; some were spies, some abolitionists, some worked on the Underground Railroad, and some even served in the military including onboard the USS Monitor.

Salsa Night at Virginia Beer Company, February 9

Sailor Made Exhibition at the Mariners’ Museum, Through February 17
This new exhibition features more than 60 items made by sailors or artisans at sea. For centuries, sailors have used their leisure time to create objects and artworks that document life at sea, commemorate historic events or simply celebrate the extraordinary skill of the maker.

Trunk Show at On the Hill Gallery, February 3 – 11
Just in time for Valentine’s Day!  Five jewelers will display, sell and demonstrate how they create their work.

“Follow the Drinking Gourd” at the Virginia Living Museum, Saturdays through February 24
“Follow the Drinking Gourd” takes us back to the days when freedom was nothing more than a dream for those held in slavery. Some looked for hope to a certain constellation with its bright shining star. The story is a poignant and inspiring tale of one African-American family’s desperate flight to freedom and how they used constellations to guide the way.

Black Settlement Presentation and Book Signing at Freedom Park, February 10
Join Col. Lafayette Jones Jr., a descendant of those that lived on the Free Black Settlement at Freedom Park for a presentation and book signing.

Civil War Lecture: Passaic-Class Monitors, February 10
Even though the USS Monitor was proclaimed the “little ship that saved the Union,” this experimental ironclad had numerous design flaws. The Monitor’s inventor, John Ericsson, set about to improve the design which resulted in the Passaic-class of monitor ships. At the Mariners’ Museum.

Star Party & Laser Evening at Virginia Living Museum, February 10
The Virginia Living Museum offers free star gazing beginning at sunset on the second Saturday of every month. The evening also includes a planetarium program and several laser shows.

My Story; My Voice, Wednesdays & Thursdays in February
Witness a compelling moment in the life of an 18th century person. Then join the discussion as the actor interpreter shares how they brought the character to life.

A Gathering of Hair, Fridays in February
Despite living in a world where most had little time to themselves and for family, the enslaved still found ways to develop a rich culture and strong relationships. Meet Elizabeth, a free black woman, and her enslaved friends, Agnes and Lydia, as they prepare for a gathering.

“Mixed Media” Exhibit at the Gallery at York Hall, Through March

Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center Features High School Student Show, Through February 9 (see website for dates)
The Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center is currently featuring the 2D and 3D artwork of students from six Williamsburg area high schools through Feb. 9. This exciting 2018 exhibition is WCAC’s 15th annual High School Student Show and includes 131 pieces by 93 students.
